Mitch McConnell Threatens Trump’s Lame-Duck Agenda Over Ukraine: Plan Accordingly

Mitch McConnell just put it in writing. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, the former Senate Republican leader warned President Trump that his push to end the Russia-Ukraine war by pressuring Kyiv instead of endlessly arming it is “certain to fail.”

He called Trump’s assessment that Russia “has been fine on Ukraine” factually wrong, strategically naive, and morally bankrupt. Then he delivered the real message: keep up the “obeisance to Mr. Putin” and your end-of-year legislative agenda, including defense spending, is at risk. Ending that accommodation “may be table stakes” for getting anything done. The president should plan accordingly.

This is not quiet counsel from a senior statesman. It is a public threat from the old guard to the elected president of their own party. McConnell, who spent years as the Senate’s chief appropriator and Ukraine aid champion, is signaling that Republicans who still prioritize the war over American priorities will block Trump’s priorities in the lame-duck session. The same Mitch who rarely found this kind of spine against Democratic presidents or against the endless foreign commitments that defined the post-Cold War consensus is now ready to play hardball when Trump tries to negotiate an exit.

The op-ed compares Trump to Biden for pausing lethal aid in 2021. It criticizes sanctions relief, limited intelligence sharing, and satellite communications access for Ukrainian forces. It frets about Russian advances and diesel deals that McConnell says won’t lower prices at the pump.

What it does not seriously address is the cost to American taxpayers, the depletion of U.S. stockpiles, the risk of escalation with a nuclear power, or the simple fact that three-plus years of open-ended support has not produced a Ukrainian victory. Voters who elected Trump did so in part because they wanted a president who would stop writing blank checks for forever wars and start prioritizing the home front.

McConnell’s warning exposes the persistent split inside the GOP. One side wants peace through strength and deals that end the fighting. The other still treats Ukraine aid as non-negotiable, even if it means holding defense bills or other legislation hostage.

Funny how the Kentucky senator only rediscovers this urgency when it is time to check the president his voters returned to office. American priorities should come first.
