Mnangagwa to Launch 259-Hectare Youth Housing Scheme as Over 100,000 Expected for Munhumutapa Day in Mvurwi Tomorrow
HARARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to launch a 259-hectare housing scheme targeting youths in Mashonaland Central province during Munhumutapa Day commemorations in Mvurwi tomorrow, Tuesday.
More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the festivities, according to organisers.
There has been a pushback from some in the opposition who say the Munhumutapa Holiday that was recently declared by Mnangagwa is just a way of honring himself since the day falls on his birthday.
The event in Mvurwi will mark the start of allocations under the Munhumutapa Housing Scheme, with 2,000 youths due to receive residential stands.
These include plots on 59 hectares in Mvurwi, plus 100 hectares each at Kimcourt in Centenary and in Bindura.
ZANU PF Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs John Paradza said the launch forms the highlight of the commemorations.
“The event will kick-start with President Mnangagwa launching a housing scheme specifically for the youth in Mashonaland Central province. We have 59 hectares of land in Mvurwi; 100ha at Kimcourt, Centenary; 100 hectares in Bindura,” he said. “We expect more than 2,000 youths to receive homes that will be delivered by President Mnangagwa.”
Roads into Mvurwi have been rehabilitated and the venue is more than 95 percent complete, with transport and food logistics in place. A final inspection is scheduled for Monday.
ZANU PF Mashonaland Central province chairperson Kazembe Kazembe said the province is ready, with residents from all eight districts—Bindura, Mbire, Guruve, Mount Darwin, Rushinga, Shamva, Mazowe and Muzarabani—expected to attend. heraldonline.co.zw
Overall attendance is projected to include more than 30,000 youths from Zimbabwe’s 10 provinces.
The Munhumutapa Housing Scheme, first launched by Mnangagwa in Masvingo three years ago, has been extended to all provinces, with most sites nearly 85 percent complete.
Officials link the allocations to broader youth empowerment efforts in transport, mining and construction.
The annual event, held on 15 September, coincides with his birthday and rotates among provinces.
It commemorates the pre-colonial Mutapa Empire, whose rulers held the title Munhumutapa and whose territory largely covered present-day Zimbabwe.
Organisers describe the day as an opportunity to celebrate heritage alongside national development goals under Vision 2030.
ZANU PF Youth League Secretary for the Commissariat Tsungai Makumbe urged young people to attend in large numbers while maintaining discipline.
Preceding activities included a Munhumutapa Half Marathon in Mvurwi aimed at promoting health and mobilising communities against drug and substance abuse.
