MoH PS says Lunte girls just stressed

The behaviour by girls at Lunte Girls Technical School, which has been termed psychogenic by experts, should not alarm the public as it is not transmissible or of an epidemic proportion.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary in charge of technical services, Lackson Kasonka, said the condition was first noticed in May this year.

He said out of the 583 girls at the institution, 18 have exhibited signs and symptoms of movement disorder.

“A lot of issues happen in girls’ schools just like in boys’ schools, resulting in stress and, as a result, they develop a certain behaviour without knowing it is being done out of proportion,” Professor Kasonka said in an interview.

“We don’t want to diagnose it as sydenham chorea (a neurological disorder) because our team, as I speak to you, is at the school…”
