MUSK PULLS THE PLUG ON UKRAINE DRONES AFTER KYIV IGNORES TRUMP ON RUSSIAN OIL

Elon Musk ordered a sudden slowdown of military-grade Starlink service in Ukraine last week, capping connection speeds so sharply that some Ukrainian attack and interceptor drones became virtually useless, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing U.S. officials and people familiar with the matter.

The restrictions hit without warning around October 13-14. Ukrainian officials said high-speed platforms lost connectivity above roughly 100 miles per hour, disrupting mid-range strike missions and air defenses against Russian drones. President Volodymyr Zelensky and his aides warned the change gave Russia an edge and could cost lives. A senior Ukrainian diplomat in Washington sent frantic messages to lawmakers saying the move would make it harder to protect civilians

The timing was not subtle. It followed days of rising friction after Ukraine continued striking Russian diesel refineries. President Trump has repeatedly blamed those attacks for higher energy prices in the United States and pressed Kyiv to stop hitting Russian energy infrastructure. Musk and Trump had discussed the issue before the throttle went into effect, sources told the Journal. The two also spoke by phone after the slowdown became public while Trump was on the campaign trail.

Musk initially pointed the finger at Washington. Hours after the disruption surfaced he posted on X that Starshield systems “are owned and controlled by the US government. Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS.” He has also stated that commercial Starlink is limited to civilian or defensive use and is not appropriate for offensive military action.

Trump rejected responsibility. He told reporters he did not think either he or Musk ordered the restrictions that affected Ukrainian operations and said he wanted to find out who did. The Pentagon under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has not been identified as the source of the order. Some U.S. officials told the Journal that Musk acted on his own; others said he spoke with senior administration officials, including the president, beforehand.

The episode underscores how much leverage private satellite technology now holds in the war and how quickly that leverage can be used when American interests and Ukrainian tactics diverge. Kyiv’s reliance on Starlink for drone guidance and frontline communications has been a constant since 2022. When that access is limited, the battlefield effects appear almost immediately.

Ukraine has already said service was partially restored within a day, but officials continue to demand the full removal of speed caps. The White House and SpaceX did not immediately confirm the details of the order when the Journal report broke.
