NAREP PRESIDENTIAL PETITION JUDGMENT DATE SET

The Constitutional Court has set June 17, 2021 as the date on which to give judgement in a petition challenging the nomination of National Restoration Party President Steven Nyirenda and his running mate Lucy Changwe.

The duo are petitioned by the party’s Vice President Charles Maboshe who wants the court to declare their nomination documents null and void claiming that their selection was not sponsored by the Party.

According to the arguments by the petitioner who is being represented by Lusaka Lawyer Christopher Mundia, the respondents have never been members of the party to file their nominations under NAREP before the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

He says if the court rules in favour of the respondent, it will imply that any person who is not a member of NAREP can be allowed to file in their nomination which is against the party constitution.

But in reply, the respondents through their lawyer Mainga Katanga and the lawyer representing the Electoral Commission of Zambia want the court to dismiss the petition with costs for lacking merit.
They have submitted that the articles cited in the petition cannot warrant the court to nullify the nomination of the respondents.
