NEW HERITAGE PARTY REJECT PROCESS TO REVIEW PUBLIC ORDER ACT

By Patricia Male

The opposition New Heritage Party is urging government not to engage in costly and time-consuming activities over the reviewing of the public order act.

Recently, Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu announced that stakeholder consultations over amendments to or repeal of the public order act will commence shortly and that an estimated K4 million will be spent on the review process.

However, Heritage Party vice president Samuel Kasankha says his party is not excited over this announcement as it believes believe so much consultation has already taken place and the views of all well-meaning Zambians on the matter are already well documented in the various submissions on the constitution of the republic of Zambia and specifically on the Public Order Act.

Mr. Kasankha explains that the UPND in opposition got more than their fair share of victimization by way of manipulation of the same legislation and the objective proposals they offered then on its transformation to make it disputed and not easily manipulated should, in addition to all other stakeholder submissions, form the basis to quickly and decisively reforming this law now.

He says his party is also skeptical about spending money on a process that had consultations already done and views of all well-meaning Zambians on the matter already well documented.
