North Korea Fires Multiple Ballistic Missiles After South Korea’s Hypersonic Weapons Test

North Korea has launched multiple ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters in what South Korean military officials suspect could be a show of force following Seoul’s recent hypersonic weapons test.

According to reports, at least one of the North Korean missiles traveled more than 900 kilometers, while Japan said it detected at least two launches.

The launches come amid growing missile competition between the two Koreas. On October 8, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung reportedly oversaw a test of the country’s first domestically developed hypersonic missile, marking a significant step in Seoul’s efforts to strengthen its advanced weapons capabilities.

North Korea had also conducted a test of a hypersonic intermediate-range missile on October 3, further highlighting the accelerating development of advanced missile technology on the Korean Peninsula.

The latest launches are expected to raise regional security concerns, particularly in South Korea and Japan, both of which view North Korea’s ballistic missile program as a major threat.

North Korea’s missile activities have repeatedly drawn international condemnation, with the United Nations Security Council maintaining that its ballistic missile launches violate existing UN resolutions and calling on Pyongyang to halt prohibited tests.

Attention is now turning to whether North Korea will conduct further hypersonic or long-range missile tests and how quickly South Korea will advance its own weapons program.
