NUSFAZ CALLS FOR TIMELY INTERVENTIONS TO MITIGATE LOOMING THREAT TO MAIZE PRODUCTION AMIDST DRY CONDITIONS

The National Union for Small-Scale Farmers of Zambia -NUSFAZ- is calling for timely interventions in order to safeguard the 2024/2025 farming season and mitigate the looming threat to Zambia’s staple food production in the wake of the prevailing dry conditions.
The Zambia Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory alert indicating that the southern half of the country will experience four days of extreme temperatures with valley areas expected to record extreme temperatures of about 43 Degrees Celsius.
In an Interview with Phoenix News, Union Executive Director Dr. Frank Kayula is concerned with the maize wilting levels especially in the southern part of the country for farmers who planted early.
Dr. Kayula however says if the country receives rainfall by mid-December, most maize that was planted early will recover and hopes that if farmers who have not yet planted do so, it will help to maximize on yields.
