OPP WARNS AGAINST REMOVAL OF PRESIDENTIAL TERM LIMITS
Organised People’s Party (OPP) president Brian Mushimba has opposed calls to remove presidential term limits, warning that such constitutional changes could weaken democratic safeguards and undermine peaceful succession.
Dr Mushimba said his party was concerned about what he described as statements from individuals aligned to those in power advocating the removal of presidential term limits.
He argued that term limits were an important safeguard against concentrating political power in the hands of one individual, party or generation.
“Presidential term limits are not an obstacle to democracy. They are one of democracy’s most important safeguards,” Dr Mushimba said.
He maintained that the presidency carried significant powers and resources, which he said should remain subject to accountability and periodic succession.
Dr Mushimba further cautioned against amending the Constitution to accommodate the interests of individuals holding public office, saying constitutional provisions should protect future generations.
“Constitutions are not written for individuals; they are written to protect generations,” he said.
He argued that leaders who required more than two terms to implement their vision should instead strengthen institutions and develop new generations of leaders capable of continuing national programmes.
“If two terms are not enough to deliver your vision for Zambia, the answer is not to abolish the limits,” Dr Mushimba said.
The OPP leader also rejected proposals to extend presidential terms or remove the 50-plus-one electoral requirement.
“We therefore say NO to any selfish proposals on constitutional amendments,” he said.
Dr Mushimba urged Zambians to oppose what he called unconstitutional attempts to remove the safeguards, saying they were intended to protect Zambia’s democracy, peace and unity.
“These constitutional safeguards must not be removed at all,” he said.
