OPPOSITION LEADER REPORTS KAFUE COUNCIL TO ACC

By Michael Nyumbu

OPPOSITION Economic Freedom Fighters leader, Kasonde Mwenda, has written to the Anti-Corruption Commission-ACC over allegations of land scandals by the Kafue Town Council.

This follows revelations by Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Garry Nkombo, implicating Staff members at the local authority for selling plots without following stated procedure.

Mwenda tells Byta FM News in an interview that his party has petitioned the ACC Headquarters in Lusaka to thoroughly investigate the allegations.

The opposition leader has challenged the ACC to prove its worth by fighting corruption scandals involving officials aligned to the ruling party.

He says the evidence provided by Nkombo is overwhelming, hence the case should not just end with investigations, but must proceed to litigation.

Mwenda has also castigated Nkombo for lifting the suspension slapped on the Local Authority in November, 2022 despite the allegations of corruption.

On Wednesday, Nkombo revealed that preliminary investigations exposed a number of irregularities involving the Kafue Local Authority.

The Minister noted that among the irregularities include selling of plots without following the required procedures, with other pieces of land shared by the Staff at the Town Council.
