Zambian political parties are attending a Southern Africa Regional Political party workshop in Sandton, South Africa.
The opposition Patriotic Front (PF) led by Deputy Secretary General Hon. Nickson Chilangwa, ruling UPND and PNP are among political parties in attendance.
Speaking on the side-lines of the workshop, Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General Nickson Chilangwa said the workshop has given political parties an opportunity to meet, share knowledge, and provide an avenue to engage with different political parties from different countries.
Hon. Chilangwa has been accompanied by PF Chairperson for Information and Publicity Hon. Raphael Nakacinda, Chairperson for Research, Hon. Anthony Kasandwe, Deputy National Chairperson, Kavumbu Hakachima and Chairperson Elections.
The Workshop has been organized by the International Republican Institute (IRI), a non – partisan, Non-Governmental Organization based in Washington DC that operates in more than 100 countries globally. The constitution of Zambia as amended in 2016 provides for regulation of political party and campaign financing, with Article 60(4) outlining the broad parameters for regulation. However, the subsidiary legislation required to give effect to this constitutional provision has never been enacted.
The efforts to enact the law were revived in 2017 with the introduction of the Political Parties Bill that was presented to the national dialogue forum. This bill in 2017 hit a snag, revealing mixed reactions on the disclosure of sources of funds and beneficiaries of public funding of political parties whether be it by representation from parliament or all registered political parties in Zambia.
