PF Statement on the Kawambwa Local Government By Election in Luapula Province
October 19th 2024
The Kawambwa MP Hon Nixon Chilangwa and the Council Chairperson were convicted of arson form incidents in the 2021 general elections campaigns. Both have appealed their conviction but to date they have neither been given a hearing date or bail as available in the statute pending appeal.
The two and Neighbour MP Hon Ronald Chitotela and his two brotyher who were also convicted of the same or similar charges remain incarcerated at the Mulobela maximum prison in Kabwe.
Meantime and despite the Stay in the High Court to review their cases, a by-election has swiftly been called to replace the Kawambwa Coucil Chairperson.
We believed this is irregular and unconditional. Consequently the PF has opted to boycott the Kawambwa by election to replace the Council Chairperson whose judicial remedies have not been exhausted. The boycott is also due to the off the norm 4 months wait for all the convicted without a date set for their Bail or Apeal hearing. Our colleagues rights to a fair judicial process have been contravened.
We therefore wish well all participants that want the council seat so bad in the back of inhumane treatment of all mentioned above. Only time will retire fair parity for all above mentioned .
To the people of Kawambwa and Pambashi constituencies we say Aluta Continua (the struggle never dies & continues)
We feel that this is an unjust act. We wish our colleagues who are in prisons God’s intervention and justice to prevail.
We shall sooner than later be back to participate in any other by elections.
Aluta Continua !
Hon John Kufuna
