Police Arrest Newton Kasonso, Brother to Prof Jones Kasonso

Following the demise of prominent US-based Zambian academic, author, and social commentator, Professor Jones Kasonso died suddenly on September 3, 2026, in Seattle, Washington, the family decided to cremate his remains.
On Tuesday 27th October 2026, his brother, Newton Kasonso arrived at the Kenneth Kaunda International(KKIA) airport with his cremated remains.
Authorities promptly detained him and the remains stating that Prof. Jones Kasonsos is listed on a red list of members of the diaspora that should be apprehended upon arrival.
Newton’s explanations that this is a case of mistaken identity as the authorities had listed Prof Jones Kasonso but were rejected and Newton Kasonso was moved to Lusaka Central Police.
After interrogations the authorities detained both Newton Kasonso and the remains of Prof. Kasonsos at Ridgeway Police Post.
