Portugal’s Economy Minister Just Called Cristiano Ronaldo a National Asset — And He’s Not Wrong

While half of Portugal is still arguing about minutes, egos, and whether Jorge Jesus was right or wrong, the country’s Economy Minister calmly stepped into the conversation and said something that cuts much deeper than football.

Manuel Castro Almeida didn’t talk about tactics.
He didn’t talk about age.
He talked about value.

In an interview with Portuguese channel NOW on 2 October, the Minister of Economy and Cohesion looked past the drama and stated the obvious that many people somehow still refuse to accept:

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of Portugal’s most important assets.

Here are his exact words:

“Cristiano Ronaldo has an enormous impact on the projection and enhancement of the Portugal brand. He is the best-known person from Portugal, many people only know Portugal because of Cristiano Ronaldo.

He Added:

This is a value, an asset that Portugal has, and it would be good if Portugal could continue to count on this asset.”

He went even further:

🗣️ “From the point of view of enhancing the Portugal brand, Cristiano has a very significant value and it would be very good for Portugal to continue to count on this potential that he gives to the Portugal brand.”

The Economic Reality Behind the Words

Portugal’s Economy Minister isn’t exaggerating. Studies show:

– €92–93 million in annual digital audience value was generated by Ronaldo during the 2026 World Cup alone, surpassing the entire Portuguese national team’s output.
– €850 million brand valuation of CR7 (IPAM, 2025), making him Portugal’s most valuable global brand.
– €23–50 million projected losses for the Portuguese Football Federation between 2027–2030 if Ronaldo is no longer associated with the team, due to sponsorship renegotiations and reduced broadcast appeal.

This means Ronaldo’s presence directly sustains tens of millions of euros in sponsorships, merchandise sales, and tourism visibility every single year. His brand impact is so large that analysts often say “in some markets, Ronaldo is more valuable than Portugal itself.”

Why It Matters

Portugal’s Economy Minister isn’t asking the national team to keep playing Ronaldo out of nostalgia. He’s pointing out a simple truth:

– Portugal benefits economically from Ronaldo’s association.
– Losing him means losing global visibility, sponsorship money, and tourism pull.
– Keeping him linked to the Portugal brand…even beyond football — is a strategic necessity.

The football debate will continue. The arguments about form, hierarchy, and respect will keep raging. But beyond the noise, the Economy Minister just reminded everyone of a basic truth:

Some players score goals.
Others put an entire country on the world’s radar.

Cristiano Ronaldo has always been the second kind.

And Portugal would be foolish to forget it.
