PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S WARNING TO COUP PLOTTERS UNNECESSARY – SANGWA

Says words such as “Military coup” should not be used given the history of the country’s democracy….
By New Dawn Newspaper Reporter

Constitutional Lawyer John Sangwa has wondered why President Hichilema took to warning “coup plotters” if he is aware of such a plot, when the Law clearly states that such should be arrested.

And Mr. Sangwa said the language recently used by the president was unnecessary and that the right course of action was not to warn but arrest the purported coup plotters.

He said the Penal Code clearly states that one can think of staging a coup but the moment the thought is shared with someone else, it becomes a crime and one ought to be arrested.

He added that there is no justification or room for the use of words like a “Military coup” in Zambia.

“This was a very unfortunate development because there was no justification for it, the starting point is that you don’t warn coup plotters, you arrest them. That’s the Law” He said.
