Residential Buildings Damaged as Ukrainian Drone Attack Hits St. Petersburg Region
Residential buildings were damaged during a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on St. Petersburg and Russia’s surrounding Leningrad region on October 18, raising concerns over the impact on civilians as critical infrastructure came under attack.
Local reports said debris from intercepted drones struck apartment buildings and private homes in parts of the region. In one incident, a fire broke out in a residential building, and four people, including three children, were hospitalized with symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
According to the city governor, 12 apartment buildings and two private homes in St. Petersburg were reported damaged. Authorities also reported residential damage elsewhere in the Leningrad region.
The overnight assault also sparked fires at oil facilities and damaged other infrastructure. Russian authorities reported intercepting large numbers of drones, while emergency crews continued responding to fires and assessing damage.
It remains unclear whether the residential buildings were directly targeted or damaged by falling drone debris. The full extent of the damage and the circumstances of each incident are still being assessed.
