RUSSIA HAS SUFFERED MORE CASUALTIES IN UKRAINE THAN AMERICA DID IN ALL OF WORLD WAR II
Former CIA Director and retired U.S. Army General David Petraeus says Russia has now sustained well over 1.4 million military casualties in Ukraine—more killed and wounded than the United States suffered during the entirety of the Second World War.
The comparison is staggering. Across every theater of World War II, the United States recorded approximately 407,000 military deaths and 671,000 wounded, for a combined total of roughly 1.08 million casualties.
Russia has now reportedly surpassed that figure while fighting to conquer a single neighboring country.
The losses are not slowing. Ukraine’s General Staff estimated that Russia suffered another 42,020 personnel casualties during August alone—an average of approximately 1,355 every day. Across the three summer months, the estimated total reached 124,170 Russian personnel.
That means Russia lost the equivalent of a battalion every day throughout August—not in one catastrophic defeat, but through the relentless accumulation of failed assaults, drone strikes, artillery fire and exhausted infantry formations.
Russia can recruit more men, raise financial bonuses and pressure its regions to produce replacements, but it cannot endlessly replace experienced soldiers, junior officers, vehicle crews and specialists. Every replacement also requires training, equipment and leadership that Moscow increasingly struggles to provide.
The exact Russian total cannot be independently verified, and casualties do not mean deaths alone. The figures include personnel killed, wounded, missing or captured, while some wounded soldiers eventually return to duty. Even with those qualifications, the scale remains historic.
Putin promised Russians a rapid campaign. Instead, his invasion is now approaching 1.5 million estimated personnel losses—more military casualties than the United States sustained while fighting a global war across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific.
Ukraine has not merely survived the invasion. It has imposed one of the greatest military costs suffered by any major power since 1945.
