RUSSIA IMPOSES BORDER CURFEW TO “PREVENT MIGRATION”—THE IRONY IS DIFFICULT TO MISS
Russia has introduced nighttime movement restrictions along its border with Estonia, officially claiming the measures are intended to prevent border and migration violations.
The explanation is deeply ironic. For years, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and the European Union have accused Russia and Belarus of weaponizing migration—facilitating the movement of thousands of vulnerable people toward NATO borders and directing them toward illegal crossing points to manufacture political and security pressure.
Now Moscow is restricting people, vehicles and small vessels within a five-kilometre strip of its own border with Estonia, presenting migration as a threat that requires direct FSB intervention.
The restrictions will remain in effect across parts of the Slantsy and Kingisepp districts until September 26. Russia has also limited access to the shoreline and small-vessel movement along part of the Narva River. Estonian authorities say they were aware of the measures but were not notified by Russia in advance.
There is no public evidence that the restrictions are connected to preparations for military action. However, Russia invoking “migration violations” to justify sealing parts of its own border—after Moscow and Minsk were accused of using migrants to destabilize neighboring European countries—is an irony that cannot be ignored.
The migrants themselves are not the aggressors; many were exploited and placed in danger. The weaponization came from the governments accused of deliberately directing that pressure toward Europe.
