Russia-Iran Military Deal: Moscow Reportedly Agrees to Supply Tehran with 90 Helicopter-Mounted Missile Launchers and Mi-28 Attack Helicopters

Russia is reportedly moving to deepen its military cooperation with Iran through a deal involving the supply of 90 advanced helicopter-mounted missile launchers and Mi-28 attack helicopters, a development that could further complicate Washington’s strategic calculations in the Middle East.

The reported agreement comes at a particularly sensitive moment for U.S. President Donald Trump, whose Republican Party has just suffered significant setbacks in the congressional midterm elections. Moscow’s decision to strengthen Iran’s military capabilities could add another layer of pressure on the Trump administration as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain unresolved.

The 90 launchers, reportedly designated APU-L, are intended for helicopter-mounted missile systems. The Mi-28 is a Russian attack helicopter that has been used in combat operations, including Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The helicopter’s reported operational capabilities and weapons systems could provide Iran with additional options for targeting military installations and other strategic positions. However, claims that the Mi-28 can strike targets at distances of up to 500 kilometres should be treated cautiously, as this figure may refer to operational range rather than the effective range of its weapons.

If the reported transfers proceed, they could significantly strengthen military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran and potentially increase the challenges facing U.S. forces operating across the Middle East.

For Washington, the development would represent another strategic complication, particularly as Russia appears increasingly willing to expand its defence relationship with Iran.
