Russia is changing its approach to Africa

Russia is reportedly seeking to deepen its long-term military-industrial cooperation with African countries, moving beyond simply selling weapons toward local production, maintenance and technical training.

At a military trade exhibition in Egypt this week, Russian defense companies showcased systems including the Yak-130M aircraft and advanced anti-drone equipment.

The proposed approach would involve establishing local repair and maintenance facilities while training African technicians, potentially giving Russia a more permanent role in Africa’s defense industries.

African countries already represent a significant market for Russian military equipment, with the region accounting for a substantial share of Russia’s international arms exports.

The developments highlight Moscow’s broader effort to expand its defense partnerships and military-industrial presence across Africa.
