RUSSIA TO JOIN TRANS-SAHARAN GAS PIPELINE PROJECT LINKING NIGERIA, NIGER AND ALGERIA

Russia is set to participate in the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, which will connect Nigeria, Niger and Algeria through a 4,000-kilometre pipeline.

Several Russian companies are expected to take part in the construction of the strategic energy project. Work reportedly began last June, with operations scheduled to start in 2030.

The development comes as Moscow and Algiers continue to strengthen their longstanding strategic partnership, following Russia’s veto of a US-backed draft UN Security Council resolution concerning Western Sahara, which critics argued sought to impose Morocco’s autonomy proposal on the disputed territory.

The project could further deepen Russia’s economic and strategic presence in North Africa and the Sahel.
