Russia Warns NATO Over Kaliningrad, Citing Nuclear Weapons
Russia has issued a stark warning to NATO, saying it is prepared to use all available means, including nuclear weapons, if an attempt is made to isolate or cut off Kaliningrad from the rest of Russian territory, according to Reuters.
A diplomatic document reportedly sent by Moscow to NATO stated that Russia would use all available weapons and capabilities to defend its territory, including nuclear weapons. The document also reportedly warned of possible strikes against decision-making centers in NATO countries.
Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, situated between Poland and Lithuania, both NATO members.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte responded to the warning by saying:
“Stop the nuclear threats. This is absolutely unnecessary.”
The exchange comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO over security in the Baltic region.
