RUSSIAN MI-8 VIOLATES POLISH AIRSPACE—WARSAW CALLS IT A TEST
A Russian military Mi-8 helicopter briefly violated Polish airspace near Braniewo at 11:08 a.m. on September 23, according to Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command.
The helicopter approached from Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, crossed approximately 300 metres into Polish territory and remained inside NATO airspace for 42 seconds before turning back.
Polish radar systems tracked the entire flight. Fighter aircraft were scrambled, while ground forces and air-defense systems were placed on alert.
Poland’s military said the incident indicates that Russia is once again testing the readiness of its air defenses.
The helicopter was not excluded from Poland’s rules of engagement. Warsaw has warned that aircraft violating Polish territory may be destroyed when the violation is clear and the object presents a threat. That does not mean every border crossing automatically results in a shootdown.
In this case, the extremely shallow penetration and brief duration gave commanders only seconds to identify the aircraft, determine its intentions, authorize an engagement and ensure that firing would not create a greater danger or strike the helicopter after it had already returned over Russian territory.
The limited duration does not make the violation insignificant. Testing how quickly Poland detects, tracks and responds to an incursion can provide Russia with information about NATO procedures and reaction times.
Forty-two seconds was enough for Russia to cross another NATO border—and enough for Poland to recognize the incident for what it may have been: another deliberate test of the alliance’s restraint and readiness.
