Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have reportedly reached Kyiv without triggering early air-raid warnings, an unprecedented incident that Ukrainian experts describe as an alarming anomaly in the country’s air-defense detection network. The episode suggests the possible combat debut of a new generation of Russian drones with enhanced command-and-control capabilities.
According to eyewitness accounts, a hostile drone was observed over central Kyiv before sirens sounded, while adjacent regions did not issue warnings either. Ukrainian analysts say this contradicts established detection patterns and indicates that existing radar and electronic-warfare layers may have been bypassed or degraded.



Electronic-warfare specialists believe the incident may involve the BM-35 strike drone, a platform first identified in 2025 and already used in attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Dnipro. The key concern is the suspected use of Starlink satellite communications for in-flight control. If confirmed, this would allow operators to guide drones in real time from long distances, rather than relying on pre-programmed routes.



Ukrainian communications expert Serhii Beskrestnov, known by the call sign “Flash,” has warned that drones using satellite connectivity would be largely immune to traditional electronic jamming, which typically targets GPS navigation or radio control links. In such a configuration, previously “blind” one-way attack drones could become dynamically guided systems capable of adjusting routes and targets mid-flight.



Technical assessments cited in the report note that the BM-35 features delta-shaped wings, an unknown warhead weight, and a supply chain involving dozens of foreign-sourced components, including parts originating from the United States, Switzerland, Taiwan, and China. Analysts caution that these drones could be employed not only for direct strikes, but also for pre-strike reconnaissance, identifying air-defense assets ahead of larger missile or drone salvos.



Ukrainian officials and experts stress that, at present, no reliable countermeasure has been publicly confirmed against satellite-guided attack drones of this type. The incident is therefore being viewed as a significant warning signal, highlighting evolving Russian UAV tactics and the urgent need for adaptations in air-defense doctrine.



This development marks a notable escalation in drone warfare technology and raises serious questions about future airspace security over Ukraine’s capital.
