Why We Are Advocating as Progressive Forces
There is a troubling trend among African leaders who loot their nations’ resources while in power and subsequently transfer their stolen wealth to foreign countries. Many hide their ill-gotten gains in the USA, Europe, and more recently, the UAE. We are coming to realize that South Africa has become a haven for these looters on the continent.
In the last national elections, we witnessed Zambian youth turning out in large numbers to vote for change. They didn’t just cast their ballots; they stood by the voting stations and followed their votes to the counting centers, as they were frustrated and eager for a change from the previous regime.
We learned about the passing of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu through social media. We anticipated that his remains would be returned to Zambia for the people to mourn him.
However, on June 18, as SANDF and various media outlets were deployed for the send-off, we were surprised by breaking news from Newsroom Africa reporting that his family chose to bury him in South Africa instead.
This prompted us to engage with fellow SADC residents on social media and hold discussions to understand the situation better.
However, as is often the case in Africa, we encountered a mix of unfounded stories regarding the misuse of leaders’ body parts for power, rather than concrete explanations.
This behavior was perplexing to us as a movement. We
began researching and read various articles. A credible source informed us about the circumstances surrounding the former president’s arrival.
He entered South Africa on January 19, 2025, using a Zambian diplomatic passport (document number: D0013831), which granted him a 90-day stay until April 19, 2025. It is noteworthy that upon his arrival, he was picked up from the Departure Terminal in a high-end blue Audi Q7, the registration of which is understood to belong to a Zambian businessman in South Africa.
Contradicting claims that he was picked up by a taxi. Why would a traveler be collected from the Departure Terminal instead of the Arrival Terminal? From the media, we learned that the former president was granted immunity from various cases opened by the current government, although legal issues may still pertain to his immediate family members. Our intention is not to attack the Lungu family; rather, we urge them to clear their names and return to Zambia. We firmly believe that there is no justification for Mr. Lungu to be buried in a foreign country when he served the Zambian people. The Zambians deserve the opportunity to mourn their leader.
As South Africans, we have yet to adequately address land issues stemming from colonization and apartheid. We claim land based on ancestral lineage, and graves are a significant instrument in these claims.
What implications might arise in the future if the Lungu family were to use their grandfather’s grave to assert land claims in South Africa? We share a deep-rooted history with Zambia from the Struggle era. It is one of the few countries that supported our exiles, and we cannot remain silent when the future of the Zambian people is jeopardized by a handful of elites.
We encourage Edgar Lungu’s family to return to Zambia and lay his remains to rest among his people, providing the answers Zambians deserve. We urge the Zambian government to repatriate the former president’s remains. Mr. Lungu does not belong solely to the Lungu family; he belongs to all Zambians.

Shameful to the UPND government and shame on you Mr Mfthetho for sacrificing the spirit of Ubuntu to the power hungry HH desperate to cling to power at all cost. A simple question for you Mr Mfthetho, I don’t know how old you are or the knowledge you have about African Freedom Struggles especially in Southern Africa. Do you know how many South African Freedom Fighters (FF) died and were buried in Zambia during Apartheid in your country? Don’t know how many Zimbabweans died and were buried in Zambia during the Ian Smith era ? Do you know how many Angolans, Mozambique’s died and were buried in Zambia ? Zambia was a harbouring state for Freedom Fighters in Southern Africa. Zambia lost its people as a result of our support for Africa Liberation struggle. Shame on you and your paymaster HH that today you can stand shamelessly and insult Zambians who protected you and your fathers from the bitter clutches of apartheid. We stood with you , we lost lives for your cause and up to today Zambian still suffers from the struggles of the liberation for Africa. Thanks to great leaders like our own late Dr Kenneth Kaunda, the late Dr Julius Mwarimu Nyerere of Tanzania, the late Joshua Nkomo of Zimbabwe , the late Oliver Tambo of South Africa and last but not the least the late Nelson Mandela of South Africa just to mention but a few. My words for you Sir/Madam, if you choose to betray Zambians who looked after your fathers when you were under the slavery of apartheid , our help will come from somewhere else but remember you and your paymaster HH will perish and you will be remembered for nothing except the great betrayal of Zambians who fed you and your fathers when the pharaoh of South Africa (Apartheid) kept you in slavery. Let me remind you two, that they are citizens of South Africa exercising their democratic rights as citizens. How dare you seek to insult and demean them, they do not need Zambians to tell them what to do.
Let me remind you all further that the Lungu’s are NOT South African but Zambians and the Progressive Forces of South Africa have more rights in their country than they do.

Foreigner, when did you become progressive? You were not a progressive Force when we provided you with shelter in Zambia , school places for your children and health facilities in Zambia?For your own information we did not only look after South Africans no . We also looked after Zimbabweans, Angolans, Mozambicans, Namibians etc. The Ubuntu Spirit if Zambia provided shelter for all. Whether refugees or Freedom fighters you were and you are still welcome because some of you intermarried among our people and even after your countries got Independence, you chose to remain in Zambia.That was the time you should have claimed that you are progressive forces. Come to Chingwere Cemetery, come to Leopards Hill cemetery, come to Matero Cemetery. I will show you where South African Freedom Fighters and their families were buried in Zambia. Some of them were retrieved and buried in South African when you got your independence.Di you remember ANC Umkhonto We Sizwe? Do you remember SWAPO, Do you remember FRELIMO? Do you remember ZANU PF. All these had offices in the great and peaceful land of Zambia and No Zambian I repeat No Zambian took to the street to demonstrate that you go back to your countries even when some of the Freedom Fighters committed murder by shooting some Zambians over girls .
