South African Rugby Star Hyron Andrews Found Dead at Team Hotel in France

South African rugby has been plunged into mourning following the death of Lions lock Hyron Andrews, who was found dead at the team’s hotel in France on Friday morning ahead of the club’s Investec Champions Cup debut against La Rochelle.

The 31-year-old was discovered at approximately 10.15am in a locked shower cubicle in the spa area of Hôtel Atalante on Île de Ré, near La Rochelle.

Emergency services were called to the scene but were unable to resuscitate him.

French authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, with an autopsy ordered to establish the exact cause.

SA Rugby said Andrews died following an accident involving a fall at the team hotel.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the Lions’ historic European campaign, with the Johannesburg-based club confirming that Saturday’s Champions Cup fixture against La Rochelle would proceed following discussions with the players.

A moment of silence is also scheduled before Champions Cup and Challenge Cup matches this weekend in tribute to the late lock.

Lions chief executive Rudolf Straeuli expressed his devastation at the loss, describing Andrews as a talented rugby player and a valued member of the team’s family.

Andrews had joined the Lions earlier this season after previously representing the Sharks in South Africa and Sale Sharks in England.

He had already featured in three United Rugby Championship matches for the Lions following his return to South Africa.

The former Junior Springbok’s death has sent shockwaves through the rugby community, with tributes and condolences pouring in for his family, teammates and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Maiglin, and their two young sons, Hendrix and Emerson

The Lions and SA Rugby have extended their condolences to the bereaved family as investigations into the circumstances of his death continue.
