SOUTH AFRICANS LEFT STUNNED AFTER DEPUTY MINISTER’S CAR HIRE BILL REPORTEDLY HITS R2.76 MILLION IN JUST 11 MONTHS — QUESTIONS GROW OVER GOVERNMENT SPENDING AS CITIZENS BATTLE HIGH COST OF LIVING, UNEMPLOYMENT AND POOR SERVICE DELIVERY

South Africans are reacting to reports that Deputy Minister Kenny Morolong’s car hire expenses reached R2.76 million over an 11-month period, averaging roughly R250,000 per month. The figures were reportedly disclosed in a parliamentary response concerning travel and transport costs within the ministry.

According to the reported figures, Morolong’s car hire costs increased significantly between April 2025 and February 2026, contributing to a total travel bill of more than R5 million. Combined spending by deputy ministers and staff within the offices reportedly exceeded R10 million.

The revelations have sparked debate on social media, with many South Africans questioning government expenditure at a time when millions are facing economic hardship, unemployment, rising living costs and ongoing service delivery challenges.

The spending figures have renewed calls for greater transparency and accountability regarding public funds and government travel expenses.

Do you think government officials should face stricter limits on travel and vehicle spending?
