TALIBAN COURTS AMERICA WITH $1 TRILLION MINERAL WEALTH — BUT GETS REJECTED

Afghanistan’s Taliban government is reportedly seeking closer economic engagement with the United States, with the country’s estimated $1 trillion-plus mineral wealth emerging as a major potential attraction.

Afghanistan is believed to possess significant deposits of lithium, copper, iron ore, rare-earth elements and other critical minerals that could become strategically important in the global competition for resources.

The Taliban has signalled that it wants foreign investment and economic partnerships to help develop these resources. But Washington has shown little appetite for normalising relations with the Taliban, leaving Afghanistan caught between enormous mineral potential and international isolation.

The situation highlights a difficult reality: having valuable resources does not automatically translate into foreign investment, political recognition or economic development.

For the United States, Afghanistan’s minerals could have strategic importance as competition over critical minerals intensifies with China. For the Taliban, access to Western investment could provide much-needed economic opportunities.

But for now, the message from Washington appears to be clear: the minerals may be valuable, but the political relationship remains frozen.
