TANKER DRIVERS THREATEN STRIKE OVER FOREIGN LABOUR DISPUTES

Zambian tanker drivers have threatened to go on strike, protesting against foreign investors allegedly employing their own workers in Zambia, a practice they claim has left many local drivers jobless.

The drivers, all members of the Zambia Union of Tanker Drivers and Allied Workers (ZUTDAW), argue that the influx of foreign workers for positions that Zambians are capable of filling, including unskilled roles such as cleaners and gardeners, is unfair and undermines local employment opportunities.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka, tanker driver Teddy Chinula expressed his frustration over the ongoing situation.

The union has called on the government to intervene and ensure that employment opportunities in the sector prioritize Zambians.

In response, the Ministry of Home Affairs has assured the public that it will issue a statement addressing the matter on Monday, December 2, 2024.
