TAYALI GOES ON HUNGER STRIKER
…as police hides him at Westwood Police Cells along Mumbwa Road

By New Dawn Reporter
EPP leader, Chilufya Tayali has gone on hunger strike in protest for what he calls an illegal detention by the Police under instructions from the UPND leadership.

Tayali who has spent four days in Police custody without a former charge or being taken to a competent Court of law to answer on any allegation as claimed, has been confined at Westwood Police Cells, 35 Kilometres from Lusaka’s Central Business District along the Mumbwa Road.

With restrictions on people visiting him, Socialist Party president, Fred M’membe has described Tayali’s detention as an assault on democracy as the arrest is politically motivated.

Dr. M’membe says Tayali’s arrest and detention is unjust, malicious and vindictive in nature by a government of cowards.

He has since demanded for unconditional release and an end to the persecution of Tayali.

“We find his arrest and detention malicious, vindictive and unjustifiable in a society that aspires to be a multiparty democracy. And we therefore demand Mr Tayali’s immediate release and an end to his unending persecution,” Dr. M’membe demanded.

And according to Tayali, he has not committed any crime to warrant arrest and detention.

He said the government is scared of diverse views and will make unnecessary arrests of innocent citizens.

Tayali has pledged to continue his struggle for a more just Zambia.

He was arrested for the offence of hate speech in connection with the remarks he allegedly made and posted on various media platforms.
