THE ARREST OF FOUR POLICE OFFICERS A COVER-UP FOR HIGH COMMAND CRIMINALITY – SINKAMBA

THERE is no way junior police officers could carry fire arms and conduct an operation without the knowledge and authority of the command, Green Party president Peter Sinkamba has charged.

Commenting on the arrest of four police officers for escorting a truck laden with suspected illegal minerals, Mr Sinkamba said the incident was a pure criminal activity.

Mr Sinkamba said that there was always a channel on how fire arms were released and it was therefore not possible that the guns were released without the involvement of the higher command.

He has called on the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to take an interest and bring the culprits to book.

“This is pure criminal activities and the ACC must take interest in this especially that Mr Gilbert Phiri when appointed made a committment that he will sort out corruption without fear or favour this is his first case. There is no way officers can carry guns and go in an operation without the command being aware so it cannot be done without the involvement of the police command,” Mr Sinkamba said.

And former Defence minister George Mpombo has charged that the development was raising a lot of concerns particularly that the four arrested officers were the escort guard for an illegal contraband.

Dr Mpombo said it was an alarming development given the recent theft of copper cathodes in transit on the copperbelt.
