DISREGARD OF SCIENTIFIC EMINENCE

By Sara Imutowana Yeta

More than four eminent Professors of constitutional law explained why Lungu is not eligible.

These are men and women exhibiting high quality in constitutional law, making them stand above other Professors in academic excellence and prominence.

Simply put, they are distinguished and conspicuous constitutional law scientists.

They do not only teach but contribute to the generation of the constitutional law body of knowledge to inform teaching, learning and practice.

Therefore, they are highly knowledgeable and skilled authorities making them reliable and credible sources of constitutional law knowledge and best practice.

Disregarding with impunity constitutional law expert opinion on Lungu’s ineligibility to again vie for elections demonstrated by the constitutional court yesterday shows how some lawyers and politicians have no regard of the body of scientific knowledge.

Until we have leaders able to appreciate scientific systems of both knowledge production and consumption based on intellectual capital, tested and reliable expert opinions will continue to be ignored making bad decision-making a commonplace.

There is no country or government system that can excel without the ability to capitalise on scientific knowledge, discoveries and basic and applied research generated by experts such as Professors and Doctors of Philosophy.

We need a government that will appreciate eminent scientists; men and women whose work is the bedrock of knowledge and best practice in our ecological system.

Never, should we make it a culture to disregard knowledge-intensive expert guidance because that is a recipe for retrogression and accelerated obsolescence.

There is no doubt that the blatant disregard of constitutional law expert illumination by the constitutional court on Lungu’s ineligibility will haunt the constitutional court, government and country as a whole.

Professor and Doctor of Philosophy, experts and scientists where is your sting?
