The coup plotters who tried to overthrow the president of Niger on August 29 are in custody waiting for trial and execution
Government forces reasserted control within hours of the attempted coup. The mutineers had seized the airport, state television, and national radio. They had Turkish drones. They had the presidency district under fire. By evening, the broadcast was back on air, the airport was secure, and the men who started it were captured.
President Abdourahamane Tiani’s government described them as young officers disgruntled with the regime. State television showed images of the captured plotters, some in civilian clothes, standing before their captors. The message was clear. Niger has survived another attempt to remove its leadership by force.
This was the first serious coup attempt against Tiani since he took power in July 2023. It came from inside his own military, not from outside.
That is the risk of military-led transitions. The same institution that brings a leader to power can turn on him. Tiani knows this. He was part of the coup that removed Mohamed Bazoum. Now he faces the same violence from his own ranks.
The captured plotters will likely face military justice. The government will use this to tighten security around key installations. And the Alliance of Sahel States will watch closely. If Niger falls to internal chaos, the entire sovereignty project of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger is at risk.
For now, Niamey is calm. The airport is open. The president is still in his palace. And the men who tried to change that are answering questions in a military cell.
