TRUMP ANNOUNCES AN ENERGY CEASEFIRE—ZELENSKYY SAYS IT WAS NEWS TO HIM

Donald Trump declared that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate “energy ceasefire,” telling both sides: “Do not break it!” But President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Axios the announcement “was news for me.”

Ukraine’s position is clear: if Russia agrees to stop attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, Ukraine will also stop striking Russian energy targets. That is an offer of reciprocal restraint—not confirmation that Kyiv had already accepted a deal.

The timing matters. Trump had just criticized Ukraine’s strikes on Russian refineries and urged Zelenskyy to stop them. His announcement now presents Ukraine as already bound by a ceasefire that Zelenskyy says he had not been told about. Russia’s side of the supposed agreement, meanwhile, still needs to be demonstrated through its action

A ceasefire cannot be mutual in a post if only one side is expected to treat it as real. If Moscow agrees, Ukraine says it will too. Will Russia actually stop hitting Ukraine’s energy system? Probably not—but the world can watch who keeps their word.
