TRUMP LIKELY TO WANT A RUSSIA FRIENDLY PRESIDENT IN UKRAINE AS DISCUSSIONS TO REPLACE ZELENSKY ARISE

Discussions surrounding a potential change in Ukraine’s leadership are gaining momentum, with US President Donald Trump publicly stating that Ukraine “needs a new president” who can negotiate an end to the war with Russia.

What’s Behind the Push ?

The Trump administration’s position appears driven by a combination of factors:

• Frustration over stalled peace negotiations and what Washington perceives as Zelensky’s unwillingness to make difficult compromises

• Concerns over rising US fuel prices linked to Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries

• A desire for a negotiator more amenable to reaching a settlement with Moscow

Potential Successors

American media outlet Newsweek has identified 4 possible contenders:

• Valerii Zaluzhnyi Former Commander in Chief, currently Ambassador to the UK, and the leading challenger with 64% trust rating compared to Zelensky’s 53%

• Kyrylo Budanov Former intelligence chief, now Head of the Presidential Office

• Mykhailo Fedorov Former Defense Minister and digital transformation architect

• Petro Poroshenko Former President (2014 to 2019)

Sakaria Shikomba Weighs In

Namibian political analyst Sakaria Shikomba offered a blunt assessment of the situation, stating:

“The more time the leadership in Kyiv takes to hold fresh elections or accept defeat, the more territory Putin will take, and that will be justified in the eyes of Trump and much of the real world. The comedian should surrender.”

Shikomba’s remarks reflect a growing divide in international opinion over whether the conflict will end through negotiation, battlefield outcomes, or a frozen conflict with shifting borders.

Zelensky’s Response

Zelensky has pushed back, stating that “the choice of leader belongs to our society and our people,” while offering to hold elections if Russia agrees to a 60 day ceasefire.

The Kremlin’s View

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Trump’s call reflects the need for a Ukrainian president willing to make “responsible and difficult decisions to end this war”.
