Trump Sparks Backlash After Posting AI-Style Map Expanding U.S. Territory

U.S. President Donald Trump has triggered diplomatic backlash after posting an AI-style map on Truth Social depicting the United States’ flag covering Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico and other parts of the Western Hemisphere.

Trump provided no explanation or caption for the image, but the post was widely interpreted as portraying an expanded United States extending far beyond its internationally recognized borders.

The image quickly drew criticism from foreign officials. Iceland summoned the U.S. ambassador after its territory appeared under the American flag, with the Icelandic government describing the post as “completely inappropriate.”

Denmark also criticized the move, with Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen calling the map disturbing and inappropriate, particularly amid Trump’s continued interest in Greenland.

The controversy adds to growing diplomatic concerns surrounding Trump’s repeated comments about Greenland, Canada and other territories, as well as his increasingly provocative use of social media and AI-generated imagery.

The post has intensified debate over whether such imagery is merely political messaging or reflects a broader vision of expanded U.S. territorial influence.
