TWO PARTIES QUALIFY FOR PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION SEATS – ECZ
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says only two political parties currently qualify for proportional representation seats in the National Assembly and all 116 local authorities.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the determination was based on the presidential election results declared on August 18, 2026.
Mr Kasaro said following President Hakainde Hichilema’s inauguration, the Commission was within the initial seven-day period provided by law to allocate the seats.
“The Electoral Process Amendment Act sets out the procedure for allocating the seats,” he said.
Mr Kasaro said the Commission had not yet received names of candidates because the process had not reached that stage.
He said once allocation was completed, qualifying parties would be invited to submit separate lists of women, youth and persons with disabilities.
He said the allocation formula would be based on valid presidential votes obtained by political-party-sponsored candidates.
