UKRAINE RETAINS ITS DRONE EDGE, BUT RUSSIA’S JET UAVS EXPOSE A DEFENSIVE GAP

Ukraine continues to hold an important qualitative advantage in drone warfare, particularly through frontline FPV operations, naval drones, long-range strikes and the rapid development of new systems. The reported interception gap concerns one specific area: defending against Russia’s newest jet-powered attack drones.
Ukraine currently intercepts approximately 60% of these faster weapons, compared with the 90–95% rate routinely achieved against slower variants, Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat told the Financial Times.
The Geran-5 can reportedly reach speeds of up to 600 km/h, carry a warhead weighing as much as 90 kilograms and travel approximately 1,000 kilometers. Its speed limits the effectiveness of machine-gun teams and many conventional interceptor drones, forcing Ukraine to rely more heavily on fighter aircraft, electronic warfare and surface-to-air missiles.
Russia is using industrial scale to challenge Ukraine’s technological advantage. Ukraine remains the more innovative drone force, but maintaining that edge will require faster interceptors, additional air-defense missiles and continued investment from its allies.
