 U.S. researchers have received $11.312 million in funding to develop enhanced red blood cells designed to help humans better withstand physical stress and extreme conditions.

 The funding is linked to a program operated by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), focusing on improving military personnel’s capabilities in dangerous environments.

 DARPA says training, sleep and nutrition can improve soldiers’ performance, but these approaches require significant time. The program is instead exploring biological approaches that could provide a faster response.

 The project is aimed at enhancing military performance, while program documents reportedly explicitly state that clinical trials or direct human testing will not be conducted as part of the research.
