USE POLITICAL POWER RESPONSIBLY TO AVOID PROSECUTION AFTER LEAVING OFFICE-UPND TOLD

The Governance, Elections, Advocacy, Research Services -GEARS- Initiative Zambia has advised officials in the new dawn government to ensure they use political power responsibly to avoid being prosecuted once they leave office.

Gears Initiative Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi says UPND officials must take a leaf from the ongoing investigations involving former president Edgar Lungu’s barber in the death of a UPND cadre Lawrence Banda who was killed by political opponents in Kaoma when the party was opposition, a case he says was swept under the carpet then, because it involved individuals associated to the highest office in the land.

Mr Chipenzi says this case should serve as a lesson to politicians that political power is temporal and they can account for their actions once they leave power.

He has since called for the prosecution of all those who committed crimes with impunity when the pf was in power in order to serve as a deterrent to would be offenders under the current regime.
