VUČIĆ CONCEDES DEFEAT, BLAMES FOREIGN POWERS AND PREDICTS SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA

Aleksandar Vučić has conceded defeat in Serbia’s parliamentary election while accusing European countries and an American “deep state” opposed to Donald Trump of helping bring his political movement down.

His concession acknowledged a victory for the student-led opposition. His explanation sought to portray that result as the product of an externally directed operation. The allegation remains his claim; the remarks do not establish evidence of foreign orchestration.

The student movement grew from protests demanding accountability after the deadly collapse of the Novi Sad railway station canopy in November 2024. What began around a national tragedy developed into a wider challenge over corruption, public institutions and political responsibility.

Vučić also predicted that Serbia’s incoming authorities would introduce sanctions against Russia by March or April. That is a forecast from the defeated political leader, rather than an announced decision by the prospective government.

For Ukraine, any change in Serbia’s approach to Moscow would matter. But an election victory does not automatically settle foreign policy, and the incoming leadership’s decisions will need to be judged on what it actually adopts.

Vučić’s response contains a revealing contradiction: he recognizes that his opponents won, then describes their victory as someone else’s operation. Serbian voters deserve recognition as political participants with their own grievances and choices—not dismissal as instruments of foreign powers.
