Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been ordered to pay Kylian Mbappe €55 million in unpaid wages following a ruling by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) on Thursday.
The decision comes after Mbappe filed a legal claim against his former club, asserting he was owed this amount.
Attempts to resolve the issue through mediation were declined by Mbappe on Wednesday, leading to the LFP’s directive for PSG to compensate the France striker for three months’ salary and the final third of a promised bonus, according to RMC Sport.
Mbappe’s departure from PSG was marked by dissatisfaction and broken promises, ending a turbulent tenure at the Parc des Princes.
His exit on a free transfer this summer has already been a significant blow to PSG, considering his status as one of the top players globally.
The additional €55 million payout compounds the loss. Despite this, PSG has announced its intention to contest the ruling and pursue further legal recourse.
In response to the LFP’s verdict, PSG issued a four-word message to Mbappe: “We are not paying.”
The French club told the AP, via ESPN: “In light of the limitations of the commission’s legal scope to take a complete decision on this matter, the matter must now be contested in another legal forum, to which Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to present all the facts over the coming months and year.”
They added: “As a matter of law and fact, the player has made clear, repeated public and private commitments that must be respected, having been afforded unprecedented benefits by the club over seven years in Paris.
And the club looks forward to these being upheld in the proper forum, if the player seeks to pursue this incomprehensibly reputationally damaging matter further, in due course.”
We haven’t heard the last of this, then. While PSG’s lawyers will be busy plotting their next legal move, Mbappe is preparing for Real Madrid’s meeting with Real Sociedad on Saturday evening.
