We take opposition concerns about shrinking democratic space seriously – Police

October 5,2023-The Zambia Police Service acknowledges the recent allegations made by opposition parties regarding the shrinking democratic space in our Country. We take these concerns seriously, as the protection of democratic principles and the rights to freedom of expression are fundamental to our society.

It is essential to emphasize that the Zambia Police Service Police is committed to upholding the rule of law, ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, and safeguarding their constitutional rights, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech. Our duty is to maintain law and order, and we respect the principles of democratic governance.

We understand that allegations of a shrinking democratic space can be a cause for concern, and we are committed to addressing these concerns while upholding the rule of law. We did invite representatives of the Socialist party to engage in constructive dialogue with ourselves to find ways of ensuring that democratic principles are upheld and respected. We had fruitful deliberations where we had suggested to the Socialist party when they can hold their Public rally between the 8th and 17th October, 2023. However they have opted to have it in the month of November, 2023.

The Zambia Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the democratic rights and freedoms of all citizens. We will continue to work diligently to maintain a safe and inclusive environment where all voices can be heard and where democratic values are upheld.
