Why UPND Needs George Mtonga as SG
UPND does not need a quiet file-keeper at the Secretariat. It needs a crowd puller.
George N. Mtonga is that man.
He joined UPND in 2015 when it was risky to be UPND. He campaigned for President Hichilema in the trenches and online when others were hiding. He has suffered for this party.
Today, no single cadre pulls the youth like Mtonga. One post from him shakes the internet. One speech moves a crowd. Ask the polling agents in Lusaka – on vote counting day, it was Mtonga who fed them, kept them alert, kept them loyal.
Yes, he criticizes the party sometimes. That is his strength. A Secretary General who only says “Yes Sir” is dangerous. Mtonga tells the truth – about mealie meal, about jobs, about promises. President Hichilema needs that truth at the Secretariat.
He is also a thinker. He understands organization, from ward-level primaries to building a party to last 100 years.
His recent message says it all: “Bring them home, don’t fight them.” That is a unifier. That is an SG.
Mr. President, put your best mobilizer where he belongs
Appoint George Mtonga as Secretary General of UPND.
