Former Sun International Hotel Union leaders have urged members in the hospitality industry not to vote for UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema in the August 12 general elections as he will abolish the service charge.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, former union chairman Martin Simumbwe disclosed that the hospitality industry, just like any other industry in Zambia, is not spared by HH’s alleged schemes and maneuvers to use State power to push for his selfish agenda of enriching himself.
Mr. Simumbwe disclosed that Mr Hichilema bought shares in Intercontinental Hotel at the time he was engaged by government at a low price and later sold it for a fortune.
“He didn’t stop at that but followed gold digging even when the hotel was sold, he become board chair where he ensured that the Zambian worker he wants to serve now got peanuts at the expense of huge profits which they shared as a board,” Mr. Simumbwe said.
Mr. Simumbwe further disclosed that Hakainde even proposed to the company not to pay service charge which is law.
He charged that it is for this reason that the former branch Union leaders for Sun Hotel Limited of Livingstone where Mr. Hichilema was chairman of the board is urging employees in the hospitality industry not to vote for Hakainde in the August 12 polls because he has not respect for workers right’s.
Mr. Simumbwe stated that Hichilema and his management team of Sun Hotel did not want to pay service charge for couple of years until workers through their representatives sued the company to the high court.
“The company started intimidating its workers to sign a form to forgo their right which meant to exempt the company from paying service charge,” he said.
The former Sun International Hotel Union leader explained that the blatant disregard of the law was the order of Hakainde Hichilema’s Chairmanship at the hotel.
He wondered how the man who mistreated the workers would then run the country to the satisfaction of citizens.
