A consortium of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has charged that Zambia has descended into a constitutional crisis following the disputed August 13th General Elections.
The organisations say the alleged arbitrary cancellation of the passports of six Zambians perceived to be critics of the UPND administration is another indication of what they describe as the country’s descent into lawlessness.
Speaking on behalf of the CSOs, LCK Freedom Foundation Executive Director Linda Kasonde says the treason and sedition charges slapped on Brian Mundubile and others, as well as the arrest of Mafinga South Member of Parliament Faith Munthali, form part of a troubling pattern in the erosion of democracy and constitutionalism.
She has since called on Zambians to defend constitutionalism ahead of the United Nations International Day of Democracy, which falls tomorrow, September 15th.
And Ms. Kasonde has also called on the UPND administration to organise an all-inclusive National Indaba as part of efforts towards national healing and reconciliation.
The CSOs include Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation, Caritas Zambia, Chapter One Foundation, Free Press Initiative Zambia and LCK Freedom Foundation.
Disputed by who???? The criminals that had declared themselves winners of the elections before even the ECZ started counting!!
Linda and the so called CROSS have now also joined the people who had their passports cancelled in spreading propaganda!!
Linda Kasonde has become a real nuisance. There was a clear winner and no case of disputed elections. Remember, she tried to file an election petition of the presidency when she was not a presidential candidate herself. Even if the law allows for any Jim and Jack to do so, what was her interest? She should form a political party instead of using her NGO to play politics.
In 2031 she will be a Presidential Candidate, mark my words. And it is not rocket science which tribal ticket she will be pushing to whip up tribal sentiments and emotions. African “caveman” mentality.
She has no ability to lead. The number of issues she has raised before the courts and lost. Show just how of touch with where Zambia is and where it wants to go…just another flaffer seeking attention. Real folks with serious intentions for the country and its people dont go around making useless noise.
I am one of the people who had held Linda Kasonde in very high esteem but not anymore. The Lady is very disappointing. She struggled hard to file in the petition and after failing, she is now claiming that Zambia has descended into Constitutional crisis after the disputed elections. Which constitutional crisis is she talking about? Just because her preferred candidates lost can not make the country descend into lawlessness, that’s misleading the people. To the contrary, it’s the losing candidates who are trying to incite the country to descend into lawlessness just because they have refused to concede defeat but that will not be tolerated. Those trying to bring and fan trouble will be dealt with severely. They will be arrested even if it meant filling the prison cells. Zambia is not known for lawlessness, lawlessness has no place here. Some people are still laughing at HH to have lost elections five times, he even tried to petition the disputed 2016 elections after losing to Lungu with a very small margin. And there was no issue of the country descending into Constitutional crisis. Why should we have crisis now just because Mundubile and Makebi have lost? What is different from others including Sata, Kalaba and HH who had equally lost in the past? There is no dispute and there should be no dispute here, the margin was too big, someone wins with over one million popular votes, what dispute are you talking about because figures don’t lie.
