ZIMBABWE’S ECONOMY REACHES A US$66 BILLION+ MILESTONE
Zimbabwe has crossed a major economic milestone, with Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Prof. Mthuli Ncube announcing that the country’s economy has expanded to more than US$66 billion.
At that size, Zimbabwe would rank around 14th among Africa’s largest economies by nominal GDP, placing it among the continent’s more substantial economies and just above Cameroon, based on current IMF 2026 projections.
The announcement came during the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA)’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, marking 25 years of service
For Zimbabwe, this represents more than just a number. It reflects efforts to strengthen economic stability, expand infrastructure, increase productive capacity and unlock growth across multiple sectors.
🇿🇼 FROM ECONOMIC EXPANSION TO SELF-FUNDED GROWTH
A growing economy also creates an important question: how does a nation generate enough domestic revenue to fund its own development?
The government has set an ambitious target of increasing Zimbabwe’s tax-to-GDP ratio to 22% by 2030
🔑 ZIMRA’S NEXT BIG CHALLENGE
As Zimbabwe’s economy becomes more diversified, ZIMRA is expected to broaden the tax base, reduce revenue leakages, use technology to improve compliance and bring more economic activity into the formal system — without unnecessarily increasing the burden on existing taxpayers.
🌍 The bigger African story is clear: economies must not only grow — they must build the capacity to turn that growth into infrastructure, jobs, public services and lasting prosperity.
