ZIMBABWE’S MINING REVENUE NEARS US$10 BILLION IN JUST NINE MONTHS AS GOLD, LITHIUM AND PLATINUM DRIVE A MASSIVE SURGE — THE COUNTRY’S MINERAL WEALTH IS GROWING!

Zimbabwe has reported a major increase in mineral revenue, generating approximately US$9.93 billion between January and September 2026, compared with around US$5 billion during the same period in 2025, according to figures cited from The Herald.

The increase highlights the importance of mining to Zimbabwe’s economy, with gold, lithium and platinum group metals among the key contributors. Higher international commodity prices have also helped boost earnings.

🥇 GOLD MINING LEADS THE WAY

Gold deliveries to Fidelity Gold Refinery reportedly reached 35.88 tonnes during the nine-month period. Small-scale miners contributed approximately 72% of the total, highlighting their significant role in the country’s gold industry.

🔋 LITHIUM AND PLATINUM ADD BILLIONS

Lithium reportedly generated US$2.16 billion in mineral sales, while platinum group metals contributed another US$1.73 billion.

The government is also pushing for more minerals to be processed locally rather than exported in their raw form. Lithium producers have reportedly been given until January 2027 to establish lithium sulphate plants.

The aim is to increase local value addition, encourage investment and create opportunities for industries that process minerals inside Zimbabwe.

📈 CAN ZIMBABWE GO EVEN FURTHER?

Mining industry leaders are targeting annual mineral revenue above US$10 billion, while the government has set its sights on mineral export revenue exceeding US$11 billion.

However, rising mineral earnings raise an important question: how much of this wealth will translate into jobs, better infrastructure, industrial growth and improved living conditions for ordinary Zimbabweans?

Zimbabwe has valuable natural resources, but turning mineral revenue into lasting economic benefits will depend on investment, transparency, local processing and how effectively the income is managed.
