KITWE BUSINESS EXECUTIVE OKAYS ZESCO’S EMMERGENCY TARIFF HIKE PLAN TO ADDRESS ONGOING ENERGY CHALLENGES

Kitwe Based Chartered Accountant, Emmanuel Mbambiko has backed the application by power utility, ZESCO, for an emergency electricity tariff hike to cushion the impending extended hours of load-shedding through electricity imports.

The Energy Regulations Board-ERB- has announced that it is considering an application from power utility ZESCO, to increase electricity tariffs by as much as 156% as an emergency measure to cover drought-induced losses.

Mr. Mbambiko however believes this should only be implemented for the period that Maamba Collieries will be offline due to routine maintenance resulting in power rationing to increase up to 17 hours daily.

The former Kitwe and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry President contends that the current energy challenges in Zambia require a collective effort from the state, the businesses community and citizens at large, if sustainability is to be achieved.
