A BETTER IDEA FOR ZAMBIA: LET US INTRODUCE MID-TERM ELECTIONS
Instead of talking about removing the Presidential term limit, let us go the American way of democracy. Let us introduce “Mid-Term Elections” in Zambia.
Mid-Term Election?
It is a small election that happens in the middle of the President’s term. For example, if the President serves for 5 years, the Mid-Term Election will happen after 2 years and 6 months.
In that election, we will vote again for “all Members of Parliament, Councillors, Mayors, and Local Leaders.”
The purpose is very simple: For Checks And Balances.
If the President’s or ruling party controls everything for 5 years with no election, they do anything they want, Like what we have seen hapanding
But Mid-Term Elections give the people power to say:
“We like what the President is doing, we will give him more support.”
OR
“We do not like it, we will give the other party power to block him.”
It is like a “half-time report card” for the President. Not at we have done this and that.
This is the only way we can end the Third Term debate.
Instead of thinking about removing the term limit, let us think about giving more power to the people. Mid-Term Elections are the answer.
To those who are pushing the idea of removing the term limit, I invite you to come and debate with me on this idea openly. Let us discuss what is best for Zambia, not what is best for individuals.
We must put Zambia first, not selfish interests.
Mid Term Election will help in.
1. It will reduce political prosecution and bitterness: When a candidate loses, he will not feel finished. He will say, “Okay, we will work hard and try again in the Mid-Term Election.” There will be hope, not fighting. And not to wait for 5 years.
2. It will reduce corruption: Leaders will know that the people will judge them in 2 and half years, not after 5 years. They will work hard and stay clean.
3. It will bring development closer: Member of parliament, Councillors and Mayors who are not working will be removed early by the people.
We also need to create Senators
Right now, Zambia has only one House – the National Assembly. The MPs are carrying all the work alone.
We need to create a “Senate” – a second House of wise and experienced leaders who will check the laws, check the budget, and protect the Constitution. The MPs cannot do everything alone.
Let us build a strong democracy where the power stays with the people, not with one party.
Zambia, let us support Mid-Term Elections.
